OZARK, Ala. (WDNews) — The City of Ozark has proclaimed September 2026 as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, according to the city and SpectraCare Health Systems.

Mayor Charles R. Ward issued the proclamation during the Ozark City Council meeting. The proclamation recognizes suicide as a public health challenge affecting individuals, families and communities.

“Suicide prevention begins with awareness, compassion, and being willing to reach out,” the city stated. “This month, we encourage everyone to check in on family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors, listen without judgment, and help connect those who may be struggling with the support they need.”

According to the proclamation, 48,824 Americans died by suicide in 2024. It also highlights the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which is available around the clock for people experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis.

“Let’s work together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind those who are struggling that they are not alone and help is available,” the city stated.

SpectraCare Health Systems thanked the City of Ozark and community partners for helping raise awareness during September.

“Help is available! If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988 now!” SpectraCare stated.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling or texting 988.
