The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the 29-year-old killed during an Aug. 8 encounter with deputies in Crestview as Antonio Austin Haner.
According to OCSO, the incident happened at 607 Alabama Street and involved deputies with the agency’s Special Response Team.
Sheriff Eric Aden previously said Haner had active warrants connected to a series of escalating threats. Those allegations included discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and firing a gun in a residential neighborhood.
The sheriff’s office said Haner fired multiple rounds at deputies during the encounter. Several law enforcement assets and nearby properties were struck by gunfire. No deputies or officers were injured.
Haner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said Sunday that investigators are compiling additional information, including relevant camera footage. The footage is undergoing investigative and legal review and required redactions before its release.
“We recognize the public’s interest and will provide more details as soon as possible,” OCSO said.
At the request of OCSO, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
