HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WDNews) — A message shared with Holmes County Sheriff John Tate is offering a reminder that change and recovery are possible, even after years of struggles.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Tate recently received a message from Donnie Groover, who the sheriff’s office said spent years going back and forth to prison and jail.
The sheriff’s office said Groover once believed that was the life he was destined to live. However, an opportunity, some grace and someone believing in him helped him begin making changes.
Today, Groover has been sober for two years. According to the sheriff’s office, he has regained his driver’s license, bought a vehicle, has his own apartment and has been approved to attend college to pursue a career in HVAC.
Groover is also now working with others who are struggling with addiction and helping them find a path toward recovery.
Groover shared part of his story with Sheriff Tate.
“I never thought I was worthy of living a sober life and living like this because I wouldn’t allow myself to have a relationship with God.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Groover said the opportunity and grace he received changed his attitude and gave him hope that he could change his life.
Sheriff Tate said the story is an example of why offering someone an opportunity can matter.
“We can’t make someone change. We can’t make someone choose recovery. And we still have a responsibility to stand our ground and enforce the law. But sometimes, giving someone an opportunity, showing a little grace, and letting them know that their life can be different can plant a seed.”
Tate said the results of that kindness may not be seen immediately.
“We may not see that seed grow tomorrow. It may take 10 or 15 years. But eventually, those seeds of kindness can pay off.”
The sheriff ended his message with encouragement for Groover.
“I’m proud of you, brother. Keep God first, keep moving forward, and keep helping others. Your story may be exactly what someone else needs to hear to realize that their story doesn’t have to end where it is today.”
“God has a plan for you. Keep following Him.”
Groover’s story offers a message for others who may be struggling: There is hope, and a person’s life does not have to end where it is today. Recovery and a different future are possible.
It also serves as a reminder of the role law enforcement officers can play beyond making arrests and enforcing the law. Thank you to the officers who choose to offer encouragement, compassion and an opportunity for change while continuing to protect their communities. Sometimes, that kindness can make a difference years later.
