DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — What began as a tense situation near Rip Hewes Stadium ended with a surprise that one little girl and her family won’t soon forget.
Tiffany McKenzie told WDNews she was out walking near Rip Hewes Stadium when she overheard people arguing. Before she could make her way over, Dothan police officers had already arrived.
“I was out walking by Rip Hewes Stadium, and I overheard some people fussing,” McKenzie said. “Before I could get to them, the police actually got to them.”
According to McKenzie, the argument centered around a birthday celebration after the little girl’s cake was destroyed. She said the child’s mother had spent her last $50 on the birthday cake, leaving the family devastated.
McKenzie said officers worked to calm everyone involved before the family returned home.
A short time later, she said, the officers showed up at the family’s home with gifts, cupcakes and a birthday cake for the child. Although they couldn’t replace the custom cake the girl’s mother had originally purchased because of the last-minute circumstances, McKenzie said the officers wanted to make sure the little girl still had a birthday to remember.
The Dothan Police Department later shared the story on social media, writing, “We were happy to help make her day.”
McKenzie also praised the officers in a Facebook post, thanking them for stepping in to make the child’s birthday special and saying their compassion and kindness created memories the family will never forget.
Speaking with WDNews, McKenzie said witnessing the officers’ actions changed the atmosphere of what had started as a difficult situation. She added that seeing the officers’ compassion also made an impression on her 12-year-old son.
“I just thought that was awesome,” McKenzie said. “There’s so much negativity in the world, and just to see that… they always get the bad end of the stick. But to see that, and for my 12-year-old son, who has it implanted in his head that cops are bad, to be able to witness that, that was just amazing.”
