MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) – Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has signed a new agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to access the federal SAVE program—Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements.
The agreement allows Alabama to use SAVE to check the citizenship status of current voters and anyone submitting new voter registration applications.
“My Office plans to begin using SAVE to verify the citizenship status of registered voters in Alabama and all incoming voter registrations in the immediate future,” Allen said. “Only United States citizens should be voting in our elections, which is what our Constitution, state and federal law unequivocally demand.”
Allen called the move a key step in protecting election integrity and credited both his staff and DHS-USCIS officials for finalizing the Memorandum of Agreement.
The SAVE program is a federal tool that gives government agencies access to immigration data to help determine eligibility for benefits or services—including voting, where allowed by law. Alabama law already requires voters to be U.S. citizens, and SAVE will serve as an added verification tool in the state’s registration process.
