Dollar General-Five Below Reverses Self-Checkout Strategy

Alabama (WDNews) – In a surprising move, Dollar General is rolling back its self-checkout systems under CEO Todd Vasos. The discount retailer, after years of investing in self-checkout technology, found that it hurt business more than helped. As a result, the company is removing self-checkout options in about 12,000 stores.

Similarly, Five Below is scaling back its self-service technologies. Citing theft and the need to enhance customer experience, CEO Joel Anderson stated this is the most significant step in their theft-mitigation strategy.

Here’s why more stores are making this change and what it means for customers.
