(WDNews) Pixar Animation Studios’ latest film, “Inside Out 2,” brought audiences back into the mind of Riley, now a teenager dealing with a host of new emotions. The film made an estimated $155 million at the domestic box office this weekend. This makes “Inside Out 2” the biggest box office opening of the year and the second-biggest animated opening of all time domestically, just behind Pixar’s 2018 hit, “Incredibles 2.”

Globally, “Inside Out 2” has raked in $295 million so far, marking the largest global animated opening ever, considering current exchange rates and similar markets. The sequel far surpassed the original “Inside Out,” which debuted with $90 million in 2015 and eventually earned $858 million worldwide.

Critics have also embraced the film, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it high praise. Director Kelsey Mann was enthusiastic about helming “Inside Out 2,” stating, “There was more story to tell. At the end of the first film, Joy asked the audience a question. She says, ‘after all Riley is 12 now, what could happen?’ Well, I wanted to answer that question.”

Pete Docter, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer who directed the first film, noted that “Inside Out” has remained relevant since its release. “We hear from people saying, ‘This movie changed the way I think about parenting,’ or ‘The way I understand my own existence’ and like, whoa, that’s pretty heavy for a cartoon — Maybe there’s more to be done with this world?” Docter said. He added that Mann was tapped to direct the sequel to explore new directions while maintaining the spirit of the original.
