Dothan Police Department offers Free Womens Self-defense Course

DOTHAN, Ala (WDNews) – The Dothan Police Department is hosting a free women’s self-defense course aimed at empowering women and girls ages 12 and up. This valuable class, scheduled for August 17th and 24th, 2024, runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day, with a one-hour lunch break from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. The event will take place at the Wiregrass Public Safety Center, located at 100 Public Safety Way, Dothan, AL 36303.

Participants will engage in a comprehensive 12-hour course spread over two days. The class covers essential discussions on existing dangers and teaches self-defense techniques suitable for women of all ages and abilities. The course aims to provide practical responses to various levels of confrontation, from verbal comments to severe physical threats.

The statistics are stark: According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), young people aged 12-34 are at the highest risk for rape and sexual assault. One in six women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Alarmingly, a child becomes a victim of sexual violence every nine minutes, and only 25 out of every 1,000 perpetrators are imprisoned.

To register for this vital class, email krlewis@dothan.org or call 334-615-4146. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn crucial self-defense skills and enhance your personal safety.
