Ozark Judge Orders Apology or Jail for Father

Ozark, AL – (WDNews) In the small town of Ozark, Alabama, a simple traffic stop has sparked a significant legal debate. Reginald Burks, a 39-year-old father and aircraft mechanic from Skipperville, faces jail time or a forced apology for harsh words he said to a police officer nearly six months ago.

On December 13, 2023, Burks was pulled over while taking his children to school. The officer, citing a broken radar gun, estimated Burks was speeding using cruise control. Frustrated, Burks lashed out, reportedly telling the officer, “Get your ass out of the way so I can take my kids to school.”

Ozark Municipal Court Judge Nicholas Bull ruled that Burks must apologize in writing or spend 10 to 30 days in jail. Burks maintains his right to free speech, even in a tense moment.

“This case might seem trivial, but it raises big questions about judicial power,” noted a law professor from the University of Alabama.

The incident highhighlights occasional tensions between citizens and law enforcement, and the extent of judicial authority in matters of personal conduct.
