In a unanimous decision, the Alabama House of Representatives approved bill HB167, spearheaded by Rep. Chris Sells, R-Greenville. The bill requires smartphones and tablets to include filters blocking pornography for minors.

HB167, championed since 2019 by Sells, received bipartisan support. The legislation moves to the Senate after its successful passage in the House.

Effective January 1, 2026, devices activated in Alabama must integrate a filter for minor users, with the option for deactivation via password. Manufacturers risk legal consequences if minors access obscene content due to a filter absence on the device.
