Domestic Violence Awareness Month Across the Wiregrass

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time set aside nationwide to raise awareness about abuse, support survivors and remind communities that help is available.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month began as a national Day of Unity in 1981 and has since grown into a monthlong effort to educate the public about domestic violence and connect survivors with resources. The 2026 national theme is “With Survivors, Always.”

For families across the Wiregrass, help is available close to home.

House of Ruth in Dothan provides confidential services for people experiencing domestic violence and sexual abuse. The organization serves nine southeast Alabama counties: Barbour, Bullock, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston and Pike counties.

Services include a 24-hour confidential crisis hotline, emergency shelter and safe housing, advocacy, emotional support, safety planning and connections to other resources.

Domestic violence does not always involve physical violence. Abuse can also involve threats, intimidation, controlling behavior, isolation and other actions used to gain or maintain power over another person.

Awareness efforts throughout October are aimed not only at survivors, but also at friends, relatives, neighbors and coworkers who may recognize warning signs and help someone connect with support.

The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence also operates a statewide hotline at 1-800-650-6522. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-7233.

In the Wiregrass, House of Ruth’s 24-hour crisis hotline is 334-793-2232. The organization says trained advocates are available day or night to listen, help with safety planning and discuss available options.

Wiregrass 211 can also connect residents with local assistance for housing, food, utilities, mental health services and other community resources. Residents can dial 2-1-1 or text their ZIP code to 898-211. The service is available 24 hours a day.

Anyone who believes they are in immediate danger should call 911.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as a reminder that abuse can affect people in every community, including communities throughout the Wiregrass, and that confidential help and support are available for those who need it.
