DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — The Dothan Police Department is warning residents about scam text messages pretending to come from the City of Dothan and Dothan Utilities.

According to police, the messages may claim to be from a “technician” and threaten that utility services will be cut off.

“These are not real text messages from anyone with the City of Dothan,” police said. “No ‘technician’ would text you about a cut off of services.”

Police are urging anyone who receives one of the messages not to call the number provided or respond to the text.

“This type of social engineering attack is common as the suspects want you to see the urgency in responding to panic you into making a mistake,” police said.

Residents who have questions about their utility service should verify the information by contacting Dothan Utilities directly through an official city contact.

“We are investigating,” police said. “Share to make sure no one falls for this scam.”
