HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WDNews) — Two people were arrested and authorities are seeking a third suspect following an investigation that began when a deputy spotted a U-Haul in the Leonia community, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said a deputy was monitoring traffic Aug. 28 when the U-Haul abruptly turned into a driveway. The deputy circled back and found the truck parked with its lights off.
The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Brett Burgess. According to the sheriff’s office, a records check showed Burgess had a suspended driver’s license and was on probation.
While at the property, the deputy reportedly noticed a man on the porch as the home’s security alarm was sounding. The man, later identified as Anthony McMillian, fled on foot after the deputy called out to him.
Deputies searched the U-Haul and found a device containing a liquid substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the sheriff’s office. Burgess was arrested.
While deputies waited for additional units, another vehicle arrived. The driver, identified as Chasitie Ash, was reportedly traveling with the U-Haul and gave deputies conflicting accounts about what had happened.
The sheriff’s office said deputies contacted the homeowner, who told them they did not know any of the people involved. The homeowner also provided Ring camera footage that reportedly showed McMillian on the porch.
A nearby neighbor later told deputies McMillian had come to his home asking for a ride. According to the sheriff’s office, the neighbor said he drove McMillian to a residence in DeFuniak Springs.
Burgess and Ash were arrested and charged following the investigation. The sheriff’s office did not list their specific charges in the information provided.
Authorities said warrants are being sought for McMillian.
“This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may follow,” the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office said.
The sheriff’s office also thanked residents and neighbors who assisted deputies during the investigation.
