DCS Volunteer Charged After Altercation With Student

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — A Dothan City Schools volunteer teacher has been charged with harassment after police say he struck a child during an altercation at Jerry Lee Faine Elementary School.

According to Dothan Police Chief William E. Benny, school resource officers responded Aug. 31 to reports of a fight involving a student under the age of 10 and a volunteer teacher.

Police identified the volunteer as 77-year-old Oscar Truitt Jr. of Dothan.

According to police, the altercation began over Pokémon cards.

“Video surveillance showed Truitt striking the child several times during the altercation,” Benny said.

Truitt was charged with harassment and booked into the Dothan City Jail.

“The safety of students is the top priority of the Dothan Police Department’s role in Dothan City Schools,” Benny said.
