DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Nearly 100 employees at a longtime Dothan manufacturing facility are expected to lose their jobs this fall, marking another significant workforce reduction for the city.
Flagstone Foods plans to lay off 98 employees at its Dothan facility beginning Oct. 22, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the Alabama Department of Workforce.
The notice was filed Aug. 20.
The state classifies the action as a layoff, not a closure, meaning the WARN notice does not indicate Flagstone Foods plans to shut down its Dothan facility.
Flagstone Foods has not publicly disclosed a specific reason for the workforce reduction. The state’s WARN information also does not identify which positions will be affected or provide a current employment total for the Dothan plant.
The facility has operated in Dothan since 1985 and handles peanut blanching, peanut roasting and tree nut roasting.
In 2022, Flagstone Foods said the Dothan operation employed about 160 people and announced investments that included a new roasting line and large packaging line. At the time, the company expected to continue hiring as its Dothan operations expanded.
More recently, Flagstone announced a major restructuring at its El Paso, Texas, operation. In 2025, the company said some private-label production previously handled there would be transferred to its manufacturing facilities in Dothan and Robersonville, North Carolina.
The newly announced Dothan layoffs come less than a year after the Alabama facility was identified as one of the locations receiving that production.
Flagstone has not publicly connected the Dothan layoffs to its previous restructuring, and no information released so far explains what changed.
The announcement also comes as Dothan has experienced other significant manufacturing job reductions. State WARN records show three filings involving Dothan companies over roughly the past 15 months, including Flagstone. Together, those notices affect 225 jobs.
Other large manufacturing operations in the city have announced significant layoffs or manufacturing closures during that period, adding to the impact on Dothan’s industrial workforce.
Flagstone manufactures snack nuts, trail mixes, dried fruits and other products. The company produces private-label products for retailers, provides contract manufacturing and owns the Emerald Nuts brand.
The 98 layoffs are currently scheduled to begin Oct. 22.
