PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WDNews) — Wiregrass residents heading to Panama City Beach this weekend may encounter traffic issues along Thomas Drive after an early morning fire destroyed Jaws Souvenirs.
According to reports, firefighters from several agencies responded Friday morning to the structure fire at Jaws Souvenirs on Thomas Drive.
Bay County, Florida Emergency Services said Bay County Fire Rescue responded to the fire with assistance from Panama City Beach Fire Rescue, Naval Support Activity-Panama City Fire and the Panama City Fire Department.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist with traffic.
“No injuries were reported,” Bay County Emergency Services said.
Photos from the scene showed heavy flames and thick smoke coming from the building as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
Panama City Beach Fire Chief Ray Morgan told local media the building is a total loss.
The fire also prompted the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes of Thomas Drive in the area. Officials said drivers were being asked to avoid Thomas Drive from Upas Street to Walnut Street while crews worked at the scene.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued its own warning Friday morning.
“Good morning, First Responders are actively working a scene on Thomas Drive involving a structure fire. Currently Thomas Drive is closed from Upas St. to Walnut,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Please take alternate routes and avoid the area this morning as this is a very active scene.”
What Wiregrass travelers should know
Thomas Drive is a heavily traveled road on the east side of Panama City Beach. Wiregrass residents planning to head to the beach Friday or this weekend should be prepared for possible delays or detours in the area as emergency crews continue their work.
Travelers should check current road conditions before heading through the affected portion of Thomas Drive.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
