DOTHAN, Ala. — According to the City of Dothan Performing Arts Department, the Dothan Opera House has been selected as one of only 12 screening partners for the 2026-2027 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, presented by South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The selection comes as South Arts celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The Southern Circuit is the nation’s longest-running tour of independent documentary filmmakers. Each screening in Dothan will feature a documentary followed by a live question-and-answer session with the filmmaker, giving audiences an opportunity to discuss the stories and issues explored in the films.
“This is exactly the type of programming we want to bring to Dothan,” said Clay Dempsey, director of Dothan Performing Arts. “Film has the power to create conversations, introduce new perspectives, and bring people together. Being selected as a Southern Circuit partner during South Arts’ 50th anniversary is an incredible honor and another step toward establishing Dothan as a destination for arts and culture.”
The 2026-2027 Southern Circuit schedule at the Dothan Opera House includes:
Sept. 20: When A Witness Recants, directed by Dawn Porter
Oct. 14: Built On Zydeco: A Louisiana Music Documentary, directed by Milton Arceneaux and Dustin Cravins
Nov. 13: Who’s The We, directed by Clayton Brown and Kimberly Sullivan
Feb. 24: My Mind To Me A Kingdom Is, directed by David Rae Morris
March 3: Who Moves America, directed by Yael Bridge
April 21: Our Movement Starts Here, directed by John Rash
According to the release, all screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Dothan Opera House unless otherwise noted. Admission is $7 per screening, and each event includes a live Q&A with the filmmaker following the presentation.
Tickets for the first three films — When A Witness Recants, Built On Zydeco, and Who’s The We — go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. and may be purchased through the Dothan Opera House website or at the Dothan Civic Center Box Office.
