BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WDNews) — According to Alabama Power, residents looking to escape the summer heat can take advantage of more than 70 free outdoor recreation areas across the state through Alabama Power’s Preserves program.
The company said the Preserves include locations such as Double Cove Park, Slackland Beach, Nature’s Way and Holt Reservoir, offering opportunities for swimming, fishing, hiking, picnicking and boating.
“Looking for a romantic getaway, a family picnic or a fishing trip with a buddy? There are more than 70 locations to choose from,” Alabama Power said.
According to the company, the Preserves are community spaces designed to provide easy access to Alabama’s natural beauty while supporting conservation efforts.
“The Preserves are a network of community spaces that offer recreational activities with easy access to enjoy Alabama’s natural beauty. They represent Alabama Power’s efforts to preserve and protect Alabama’s natural resources,” the company said.
Many of the Preserves also feature pollinator plots to support bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators that play an important role in Alabama’s ecosystems.
According to Alabama Power, amenities vary by location and may include boat launches, fishing piers, playgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, swimming holes and weigh stations.
The company noted that each Preserve has its own hours of operation and site-specific rules, and visitors should check those before traveling.
Among the highlighted locations:
Double Cove Park on Logan Martin Lake features a picnic area, lake views and access to the water.
Slackland Beach at Weiss Lake offers an accessible trail, picnic tables, a gazebo and a protected swimming area.
Nature’s Way at Lake Martin includes more than 70 acres of hiking trails, picnic spots, water overlooks and lake access.
Holt Reservoir on the Holt Dam features a picnic area and fishing pier.
According to Alabama Power, the Preserves are located throughout the state and are open for free public use, providing outdoor recreation opportunities for families, anglers and nature enthusiasts.
