DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — An 18-year-old Montgomery man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the fatal July 4 shooting that claimed the life of an 18-year-old Dothan resident.
According to the Dothan Police Department, officers and Dothan Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a reported shooting in the 800 block of Hutchins Street at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 4.
When officers arrived, they found Ja’Marion Rashawn Snell, 18, of Dothan, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Snell died from his injuries on Wednesday, July 8.
On Tuesday, July 14, investigators with the Dothan Police Department, along with members of the United States Marshals Service Gulf Coast Regional Violent Fugitive Task Force, arrested Avaughn Ahmad Brown, 18, of Montgomery, in Montgomery.
Brown has been charged with murder in connection with the July 4 shooting. Police said he will be transported to Dothan and booked into the Houston County Jail, where he will be held without bond.
According to investigators, Brown was already out on bond on an attempted first-degree assault charge stemming from a March shooting.
The investigation remains active, and police said additional arrests are possible.
“Detectives continue to actively pursue all investigative leads, conduct interviews, and analyze evidence to identify those responsible,” the department said. “The Dothan Police Department remains committed to bringing those responsible to justice and providing answers to Mr. Snell’s family.”
