Reminder for Families About Vaccines

WIREGRASS, Ala. (WDNews) — Summer has just begun, but now is a good time for parents to make sure their children’s vaccinations are up to date before the next school year arrives.

The Alabama Department of Public Health requires students attending public and private schools to have age-appropriate immunizations and a valid Certificate of Immunization, commonly known as a “Blue Card,” unless they qualify for an approved exemption.

Officials encourage families to review their children’s immunization records early rather than waiting until the weeks leading up to the start of school. Scheduling appointments during the summer can help avoid last-minute delays and allow time to obtain any required vaccinations or updated records.

Required vaccines vary based on a student’s age and grade level. Alabama’s school immunization requirements include protection against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. Students entering middle school may also need a Tdap booster and other age-appropriate immunizations.

The Alabama Department of Public Health also recommends additional vaccines, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, HPV and meningococcal vaccines.

Parents with questions about their child’s immunization status should contact their healthcare provider, local county health department or school nurse. Vaccinations are available through physicians’ offices, public health departments and some walk-in clinics.

Taking a few minutes this summer to review vaccination records can help ensure students are ready when the next school year begins.
