CRESTVIEW, Fla. (WDNews) — Two people were arrested after an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office traffic stop in Crestview led to the seizure of suspected fentanyl, cash and a handgun equipped with an illegal machine gun conversion device.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a gray Chevrolet Equinox after observing a traffic violation near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and South Lloyd Street. As the vehicle slowed to a stop, two passengers reportedly fled on foot while the driver left the area in the vehicle.
Deputies quickly apprehended both passengers after a brief foot pursuit.
During the investigation, deputies recovered a backpack allegedly carried by one of the fleeing passengers. Inside, investigators found approximately 39 grams of a substance that field-tested positive for fentanyl, about $2,400 in cash and a Glock 17 handgun equipped with a “switch,” an illegal conversion device that allows a semi-automatic firearm to function as a fully automatic weapon.
Authorities said the firearm was also equipped with a 30-round magazine.
One of the suspects, Naasir Wright, was charged with trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a machine gun, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer without violence. Jail records also show a charge related to a short-barreled rifle or machine gun.
A second passenger, Christopher Rogers, was charged with resisting an officer without violence.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active.
