Level Plains, Ala. — Two Dale County residents are facing dozens of animal cruelty charges after police said multiple dogs were found living in poor conditions at a Level Plains home.
According to the Level Plains Police Department, officers responded Monday morning to a report of possible animal abuse at a home on Phyllis Avenue.
“A person went to pick up a cat from the home and reported the condition of the environment”, Chief Summers said.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found several dogs living in unsanitary and concerning conditions. Police said the preliminary investigation raised serious concerns about the animals’ health, welfare and overall care.
According to Chief Summers of Level Plains, animal feces were everywhere, dead dogs and cats were found wrapped and put into a freezer and refrigerator. The animals that were alive had their ribs showing.
The two suspects involved operated a “self proclaimed shelter” . Chief Summers said they were not affiliated to other shelters that he was aware of.
Glenn Egan, 25, and Kristen Slater, 22, were arrested following the investigation.
Police said both are charged with 31 counts each of aggravated animal cruelty or neglect. The charges stem from evidence collected at the scene and observations made by investigators.
“It was unbelievable”, Summers said. “This hit home, I am a big dog person. Its the most personally affecting scene involving animals ive seen”.
Officials have not released additional details about the condition of each dog or what led to the investigation.
Four buried animals have been retrieved and sent to Auburn for an autopsy. Depending on the results more charges could come.
Several Wiregrass animal rescue organizations assisted law enforcement by helping remove and care for the dogs and cats.
