GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. (WDNews) — Two people lost their lives in separate traffic incidents Saturday in Geneva County, according to officials.
The first happened just after 12:30 a.m. along Alabama Highway 52 in Hartford. Geneva County Coroner Donny Adkinson identified the victim as 54-year-old Richard Williams Jr. of Hartford.
Authorities said Williams was walking along the highway when he was struck by a vehicle. An eyewitness reportedly called 911 after seeing a man in the roadway shortly before the crash. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Later that morning, another fatal crash occurred around 7:50 a.m. on North State Highway 123. Coroner Adkinson identified the victim as 24-year-old Veronica Garcia-Mata of Hartford.
Officials said the crash involved three vehicles. Garcia-Mata was pronounced dead at the scene. One other driver was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries, while a third driver was not reported injured.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, along with local agencies, is investigating the cause of the crash.
Saturday’s incidents mark a tragic day on Geneva County roadways as authorities continue working to determine exactly what led to both crashes.
