DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Strong storms are expected to move across the Wiregrass later today, bringing the potential for heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated severe weather.
Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon hours and continue into the evening. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, along with brief heavy rainfall. While the overall severe threat is considered limited, conditions may support a few stronger storms before midnight.
Residents in Houston, Coffee, Dale and surrounding counties are encouraged to remain weather-aware throughout the day, especially during the late afternoon and evening commute.
Temperatures will remain warm ahead of the storms, but that will quickly change.
Behind the system, much colder air is expected to move into southeast Alabama overnight. Sunday’s high temperatures are forecast to reach only the mid-50s, with overnight lows dropping near freezing. Breezy conditions are also expected to make it feel even cooler.
No widespread warnings were in effect early today, but officials urge residents to monitor local forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
After today’s unsettled weather, a stretch of cooler and drier conditions is expected to settle over the Wiregrass heading into early next week.
