Houston County Commission Awards Jail Renovation Project; Discusses Possible Expansion

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — On Tuesday, the Houston County Commission greenlit a major renovation project for the Houston county jail and explored the idea of future expansions.

The $1.2 million renovation project will upgrade the jail with automated locks, enhanced cameras, and a new alarm system. Thanks to a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), over $1 million of the project’s cost is covered. However, the county still needs to allocate over $200,000 to meet the full budget.

The renovation contract was awarded to a Montgomery-based company, with an expected completion time of 4-6 months. During the meeting, commissioners also discussed the potential for expanding the facility to address growing needs.
