Level Plains – (WDNews) On May 18th, 2024, Level Plains Police and Fire, assisted by the Dale County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a traffic accident on the eastbound side of Highway 84 near County Road 109. While clearing the initial scene, authorities witnessed a second accident on the westbound side of the highway.

As police mobilized to respond, they identified a vehicle fleeing the scene. A Dale County Sheriff’s Deputy quickly intercepted and detained the suspect. Meanwhile, Level Plains Police and Fire attended to the vehicle that was struck.

Investigations revealed that the driver who fled the scene was intoxicated. Shockingly, multiple children were found in the car without restraints or seatbelts.

“Thanks to Sheriff Bynum and DCSO, LPVFD, and my officers for ensuring the safety of the children along with holding the subject responsible,” said Chief Summers of the Level Plains Police Department. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated in Level Plains, and we will hold individuals who break the law to the fullest extent.”

The driver was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, driving under the influence of alcohol, and six counts of reckless endangerment of a child. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been released.
