8-Year-Old Girl Shot Multiple Times in Birmingham’s Gate City Neighborhood

Birmingham – (WDNews) The Birmingham Police Department is actively investigating a distressing incident in the Gate City neighborhood, where an 8-year-old girl was tragically shot at least twice on Sunday evening. Authorities responded swiftly to reports of gunfire emanating from the vicinity of Joppa Avenue around 9 p.m., following multiple alerts from the Real Time Crime Center’s shot spotter system.

Preliminary investigations suggest an alarming volume of gunfire, with over 70 shots fired in the surrounding area. As officers rushed to the scene, they received alarming news: a young victim had been brought to Birmingham Fire Station 12, suffering from at least two gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service promptly transported her to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Although the situation remains grave, there is a glimmer of hope as initial reports from the hospital indicate the girl’s chances of survival are promising. However, the exact circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. According to the Birmingham Police Department’s preliminary findings, a shootout erupted in the Gate City neighborhood during what appeared to be a Mother’s Day celebration, attended by approximately 60 to 70 individuals.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald, present at the scene, disclosed that the girl and a parent were traveling in a vehicle through the area when the gunfire erupted, tragically resulting in her being struck. Authorities suspect that two individuals are responsible for unleashing the barrage of gunfire, but as of now, no suspects have been apprehended.
