Washington County – (WDNews) In a tense turn of events on April 27, 2024, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Salem Drive in the Sunny Hills community. Their mission: to execute an out-of-county arrest warrant on 42-year-old Brian James Propes. The warrant was for serious charges including sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child sexual performance materials, totaling 20 counts with a $200,000 bond.

Upon arrival, deputies were guided by family members to a rear bedroom where Propes was located. As they moved to make the arrest, Propes resisted, escalating the situation by brandishing a firearm. In the ensuing struggle, deputies were forced to defend themselves, resulting in shots being fired and Propes being fatally wounded. Despite prompt medical attention from Washington County EMS, Propes succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Following standard procedure for incidents involving law enforcement, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has been notified and will oversee the investigation going forward, ensuring a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
